Ladies crush students for top 4 finish

Dundee ladies completed their League 1 programme with a home game against Edinburgh University ll on Tuesday at Craigie High School.  The re-arranged game from the ‘snow days’ in early March had a difficult start for the home side.  A 4/3 lead with scores from Sarah Driscoll and Natalia Stopowska was reversed as the Edinburgh students profited from a serve error and then scored 7 points without reply!  A series of 4 errors and 2 serves won points to take an 11/4 lead.  The students then gave up 4 points through errors to the home side but 3 smart attacks kept the 6 point gap.  Dundee’s power hitters, Sarah Driscoll and Natalia Stopowska, then took control of the game.  They scored 5 points before Driscoll missed with an attack from the right side of the court.  Stopowska then won the side–out point allowing Driscoll to score 6 points from her serve including 4 ‘aces’ and another kill from Stopowska.  Dundee had taken a 22/17 lead and a quick attack from Lana Edgar gave the home side the set 25/20.

The same Driscoll and Stopowska combination controlled the second set as Dundee took a 16/13 lead.  Great defence from Claire Pollock and Lana Edgar kept the students at bay and allowed the wide players to score freely.  Lauren Smith caused the visitors problems with her high deep serves allowing the Dundee side to score in counter-attack.  Claire Pollock weighed in with 2 winners to take the score to 21/15.  Lana Edgar then combined with setter Lucy Wishart with a score block, and a quick hit and service ‘ace’ from Wishart, winning the set 25/19.

The third set disappeared in a whirlwind of points for Dundee.  7/2 became 10/5 with scores from Driscoll, Stopowska, Claire Pollock and Agnes Bednarek.  Lana Edgar scored 3 points from her service and then the power hitters took the score to 22/9.  She then finished off the set and match with a score net block and an attack from the middle of the court winning 25/11.  This win lifts Dundee to a 4th place finish in League 1.
