Robbie comes back to haunt Dundee!
22 October V NUVOC
Men V NOVOC
An old friend came back to haunt Dundee’s mens’ team last Saturday in the Scottish Volleyball League 1 when NUVOC were the visitors to Craigie High School. Robbie Binnie, who spent 4 years at the Dundee club while at university and developed to progress to be included in the National Team training squad, was the main player in a win for the visitors. The home side started well and put the NUVOC side under pressure forcing them into mistakes and with Mike Coward and Oz Dowie scoring well at the start of the set, Dundee took a 16/9 lead. Petr Kolomaznic and Mark Donnachie helped Coward as the Dundee side took the set 25/16.
A change in line up at the start of the second set had a devastating effect on the home side as their service lost impact and their attack started to falter. Enter Binnie, who started to apply pressure with his height and power and the tables were turned as NUVOC took a 15/6 lead. The home side were having difficulty controlling the visitors service and hit with any power and the game was level with NUVOC taking the set 25/14.
The third set started to follow a similar pattern with Binnie as the visitors ‘go to’ player helping to keep his side on top. Mike Coward, Dave Bonnar and Colin McEvoy all scored points to try and close the widening gap but the home attack faltered too often and they surrendered the set 12/25.
The fourth set started with a service error from the Dundee side and then they collapsed, giving up a run of 8 points without reply, to find themselves 0/9 down. The NUVOC service was causing problems for the home side as they pushed on to lead 16/5. Mike Coward was the only hitter able to score from limited supply of ‘sets’ and the game petered out with the Edinburgh side inflicting a heavy defeat winning the set 25/12.
