Northern Lights shine for men with a win over Vortex

Dundee’s men secured back-to-back wins last Saturday with another difficult and frustrating hard-fought game. The journey north to take on Aberdeen Vortex provided a chance to seal a win and
Dundee started well opening up a 15/9 lead. Lewis Crockart and Bart Zywert were Dundee’s scorers
and they continued to score with the score at 19/14. Vortex came back and capitalised on poor
attacking decisions and levelled at 23/23. A big hit from Tony Gadzhev and a block from Oz Dowie
gave Dundee the set 25/23.
New signing Pim Wallenburg made an immediate impact with several big quick attacks and his 6’ 8”
frame proved very helpful. Dundee moved smoothly to 17/12. An unexpected run of mistakes again
by the Dundee attack allowed the home side back into the set. ^ errors and 3 scoring blocks handed
cheap points to the home side until Crockart and Wallenburg finished the set to win 25/23 again.
A run of 9 points without reply gave the home side a 15/7 lead and they held it comfortably to take
the third set 25/18. The fourth set swung in either side’s favour and the scores remained close. All 5
of Dundee attackers scored points with a run of 3 points from Gadzhev had Dundee ahead at 20/18.
A short run of 4 points took Vortex ahead and both sides scored side-out points, with the home side
winning the set 25/23. Dundee started the set with momentum from the fourth set and moved to a
7/1 lead. Untidy attacking by Dundee again let the home side back in and they closed the gap to
9/11. Wallenburg and Gadzhev had the last say as they helped Dundee over the finish line to win the
final set 15/10 for their second win.
