Revenge for Men against Edinburgh Students

Published by admin on

Dundee’s men’s side secured a fine 3/0 win over Edinburgh University in the Scottish National League 1 last Saturday in Craigie High School.  The students had beaten the Dundee side in September in round 1 of the Scottish Cup and were out to repeat the result.  The home side had other ideas and took an early 8/3 lead with Lewis Crockart to the fore.  Both sides were in a generous mood for the next spell of play as they handed each other points in errors!  It was the home side that eventually took the game in hand with scores from Mike Coward, Craig Goldthorp and Dave Bonnar to take the set 25/18.  It was all Dundee in the second set as they raced to a 14/5 lead, with Coward and Crockart again scoring well from both sides of the court.  A series of 8 errors allowed the students to come back into the set at 14/20 but scores from Goldthorp and Kevin Chisholm snuffed out the threat and Dundee took the set 25/19.

Mike Coward and Oz Dowie were in top form in the third set as Dundee strode to a 9/3 lead, with the students struggling to win back the service. The home side was able to control the University attack and Goldthorp and Crockart again profited from clever but steady play from setter, Barry Millar.  Miller then scored with a hit in counter attack to give his side match point at 24/14.  A run of 3 errors in a row, as Dundee tried to finish in spectacular style, spoiled the performance. However, they won through 25/19 to gain revenge for the cup defeat.
